We’re looking for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join a major research group at their sites in Durham and Sedgefield.

This is an excellent opportunity to develop and implement new designs and modifications across multiple projects. As a company, they use cutting edge technologies to develop
complex instrumentation for high profile national and international projects.

This is a varied role with no two days looking the same, giving you the scope to make the role your own and structure your day accordingly.

Job Role


  • Provide day-to-day management and execution of design and engineering tasks

  • Work with internal and external partners, collaborators, and customers

  • Ensure assembly, integration & test activities are managed in line with customer requirements

  • Leverage knowledge from other disciplines (e.g. electrical & control systems) to support the design, development and integration of complex optical, mechanical, electrical and control sub-systems

  • Analysing and reporting results

  • Provide specialist technical problem-solving advice to inform project activity

  • Manage procurement activities and test/compliance programmes whilst leading the technical liaison with contractors

  • Contribute to the delivery of research outputs and support the preparation of innovative proposals for research or industrial projects

  • Contribute to promotional events and presentations at conferences




  • Educated to degree level in either mechanical engineering or physics (or equivalent experience)

  • Involvement in the design, manufacture & test of complex or high precision mechanical or opto-mechanical products, systems or instrumentation

  • Highly competent in at least one major CAD software package, covering design and detailed drawing activity.

  • Ability to perform design calculations and structural analysis

  • Ability to communicate clearly in both written and verbal forms, especially able to prepare high quality written documentation

  • Ability to diagnose, solve problems and resolve issues


The role will encompass a broad array of mechanical engineering design activities from concept development through to detailing and system delivery.
