NRG is proud to once again be partnering with Darlington Building Society in their search for a Lead Underwriter.
Reporting to the Head of Underwriting the successful applicant will lead the delivery of the underwriting of the Society’s mortgage applications whilst ensuring all risks are identified and controlled in line with the Society’s obligations as a responsible lender and the lending risk pillars.
A few of the many things you will do in the role:
To be responsible for a team of underwriters to ensure that all key objectives are delivered in the underwriting team on a daily basis.
Responsible for the day to day management of the team and department work levels and service level agreements.
Responsible for training and development and effective use of balance scorecard, 121’s and the performance review process for the members of the underwriting team direct reports to enhance individual’s performance and personal development.
Motivates and leads direct reports to ensure strict adherence to key performance indicators and service level agreements.
Take a positive proactive approach leading by example in identifying and implementing improvements to processes.
Reviewing initial mortgage applications to issue first Decision in Principle that comply with Society’s Lending Policy and advising on required documentation to progress the mortgage case.
Execution of mandate at formal offer stage, clearly stipulating the rationale for the decision in line with the individual delegated authority and ensuring full justification and documentation of decisions made.
To effectively communicate lending decisions on a timely basis to internal stakeholders.
To comply with any and all conduct rules which are from time to time issued by the FCA and/or the PRA and are applicable to your role.
The type of person we are looking for:
5 GCSE passes C+ (or equivalent) including Maths and English
Have or be prepared to complete Cemap or equivalent qualification within 9 months from appointment
Minimum of 12 months experience in leading a team
A minimum of 2 years’ experience of manual underwriting residential mortgages with a minimum mandate of £250k including interpretation of self-employed accounts
Awareness of BTL lending and self-build lending
Understanding of and adhering to regulatory and industry requirements in an underwriting environment
Be able to identify, suggest and implement best practices in underwriting matters
Experience of Underwriting methodology and loan assessment writing skills
Brings new ideas forward
Ability to work alone as well as part of a team
Is a Self-starter, able to use own initiative and motivate others
Is organised and disciplined
Is adaptable, able to switch between tasks
Looks for opportunities to improve
Cemap or equivalent mortgage/building society training
Level 3 or above qualification in people management and or leadership
At least 2 years previous experience supervising an underwriting team
A minimum of 12 months experience of underwriting self-build mortgage
Interpretation and implementation of regulatory and industry requirements in a financial services/mortgage environment
