Department Manager

As a member of Department of Anthropology’s senior management team, the post holder will be responsible for leadership of the operations and administrative functions of the Department and supporting the development and delivery of the Department’s strategic vision.




  • Be qualified to degree level or have recent equivalent demonstrable experience in a similar role

  • Demonstrable ability to provide operational and strategic management, underpinned by relevant experience

  • Experience of staff management, including leadership motivation and coaching of team members, and experience of leading and managing change to ensure delivery of excellent service

  • Experience of providing evidence-based advice and guidance to senior management

  • An understanding of how systems can be used to improve business processes and deliver effective and efficient services for end users

  • Excellent negotiation, influencing and networking skills

  • Strong intellectual resources and high-level analytical skills and the ability to take the broad view

  • Ability to find effective solutions to complex problems and issues

  • Ability to navigate competing priorities and organise people to achieve an appropriate outcome within the desired timeframe

  • Diplomacy, integrity and a high level of discretion together with the ability to maintain confidentiality at all times

  • Proven project management skills with the ability to lead multiple projects with different aims, objectives and stakeholders

  • A commitment to the Department and University’s values, aims and objectives and an enthusiasm for all that it is seeking to achieve

  • An excellent understanding of major policy issues in HE and an ability to apply this knowledge practically in University policy and to the Department in particular.




  • Understanding of professional support and administrative functions in a university context.

  • A working knowledge of how a University Department/School operates and proven ability to work within an academic setting.

  • A track record of ongoing professional development

  • Experience of budget setting and financial management

  • Experience of having been involved in Strategic Planning
