Social Housing – Attracting Talent
The social housing sector is a truly dynamic but largely hidden business sector, one of the biggest challenges our clients face is the attraction of top talent.
Awareness from those outside the sector
When briefing a candidate from a commercial background on the Social Housing Sector, they are generally aware of the company names but the initial conversation is normally spent explaining the sector and what it does.
The social housing sector is often not a natural thought for a next career move and candidates are not aware of the excellent and varied career opportunities on offer.
NRG are expert in recruiting for the Social Housing Sector. We have worked with RSLs and ALMOs both large and small. Interestingly; NRG appointments into the sector recently have been approximately 50% those with prior housing experience and 50% candidates entirely new to the sector.
As the housing sector adapts to changes in the commercial and political landscape we are regularly being asked to recruit candidates from the private sector with commercial experience who are compatible with the sector’s social purpose. A strong personal fit with the organisation is still the number one requirement. However client’s requirements now often stipulate commercial acumen coupled with empathy and passion for the sector.
“Many people are either unaware of the career options available in Social housing, the range and variety of roles on offer, or perceive that a background in housing is necessary. Housing Associations are a fascinating place to work. ” Charlotte Carpenter, Executive Director for Growth and Business Development, Karbon Homes
