UK exports benefit cancer diagnostics

The Leica brand has a long-standing and innovative history dating back to the 19th Century. In 2006 Leica acquired Novocastra Ltd, a company initiated from a commercial venture within Newcastle University, as part of a plan of continued investment in the Life Sciences and Medical Diagnostics sectors. Newcastle then became a flagship site for the research, development, production and distribution of high quality advanced staining reagents, exporting internationally to a global customer base consisting of learning establishments, hospitals and pathologists.
Over 200 people work as part of the Advanced Staining Reagents and Clinical Microscopy Applications Business Units in Newcastle. The key range of products developed and manufactured at this site belong to the “Novocastra” global product portfolio; a business at the forefront of research and development of antibodies and reagents for the detection and diagnostics of cancer and infectious diseases for the last 20 years. The Novocastra product portfolio is recognised and trusted globally with a reputation for quality and innovation.
Distributing a range of over 1500 products to more than 120 countries, the Newcastle site is an integral part of worldwide operations making a significant contribution to Leica Biosystems’ total sales worldwide. The team is focused on achieving their vision through the development and delivery of products which aid medical diagnostics worldwide.
