Manufacturing Growth Network Q1 results announced

As before, we highlight the North East’s top performing manufacturing businesses over the last quarter in league tables focused on Turnover, Productivity, Exports and Apprenticeships. These have been compiled from data supplied to EY and once again we’d like thank all those who provided this data.
The interviews that accompany the tables have been conducted with the leaders of four of the featured top performers. They explain how and why they have performed so well and indicating some of the investment and other growth strategies that are making the difference in their businesses.
TURNOVER: Growth in turnover comes with hard work, clear strategies, a committed workforce and strong management. Colin Simpson, of Billingham-based pump manufacturer Tomlinson Hall, describes the ethos and culture within the business, as well as local collaboration that has made a huge difference to its turnover figures.
PRODUCTIVITY: Productivity leads to growth, and DS Smith has increased productivity through a programme of efficiencies and innovative techniques. Tim Wilson, who oversees manufacturing of the Spennymoor company’s plastic foam products, explains how.
EXPORTS: Exporting manufacturing businesses in the North East are currently enjoying favourable market conditions. Caraline Robinson, manufacturing director at Newton Aycliffe-based Husqvarna UK, highlights the markets to which the robotic lawn mower manufacturer’s exports.
APPRENTICESHIPS: Apprenticeships – along with other in-house training efforts – are back in vogue, programmes being re-established by many North East manufacturers as they see this as having clear business benefits. One such company is Formica Europe and Paul Foreman, the chief operating officer, outlines why.
What clearly emerges from these in-depth interviews is the continued strength of the North East manufacturing base, how they are competing in sometimes difficult markets and how integral innovation is to them all.
