Gary Rogers, Managing Consultant of the IT & Digital division at NRG, talks of his career journey with the business and the opportunities we provide to help our employees achieve success #LikeNoOther
What is your role at NRG?
I currently head up the IT & Digital division, covering both the permanent and contract market and I have a number of people that report in to me including recruitment consultants, account managers and admin staff.
How have you progressed with NRG?
I got the job by chance. NRG actually found me my first job in the North East when I moved to the region 15 years ago, and it was around that same time that I talked to a few consultants here about a career in recruitment. To be honest, I had never really thought about it, so I trialled it. I had a couple of days shadowing a number of consultants and I thought it would be a good idea to give it a shot – and nine years down the line I’m still here.
What makes NRG a great place to work?
There’s a lot of stability here and I think that’s really important. There’s a lot of competition in the market place, lots of chopping and changing in other organisations. One thing that has been stable at NRG has been the likes of Lorna, Therese and Leanne, all of which have been very good to me. I’ve worked hard and deserved my opportunities within the business, but I have been supported tremendously which is fundamentally one of the reasons why I’m still here.
How would you describe the company culture?
It’s quite busy and buoyant – it’s a sales focused floor so there’s quite a lot of buzz. I’m quite an energetic person so I feed off that and I don’t like an office that’s quiet. I work with a good team and have good people who report in to me – I feed off them and they feed off me.
There’s also a good work ethic, we all know what we need to do and we’re not micromanaged; we’re trusted with our desk and our market. We get support from senior managers but it’s about going out and doing the job to the best of our ability while knowing we have senior management to fall back on should we need to run anything past them.
You’re hoping to expand your team, what are you looking for in potential candidates?
We’re credible, we’re professional and we want people who are willing to work hard and be rewarded. Importantly, we we’re looking for people who can build rapport with candidates and clients, so it’s pivotal that individuals can talk to people face to face, whether it’s a candidate, client or another consultant. Communication is probably the most important part of our job, as nowadays business development is largely done face to face at either networking events or client meetings. If you can’t have a conversation with someone then you’re going to struggle.
It’s imperative that we look for people who are hungry, motivated and eager to pursue a career in recruitment.
