Operational Efficiency Through Temporary Workforce

Calsonic Kansei Europe is a supplier of heat exchange, air conditioning, exhaust, interior, and electronic automotive components headquartered in the UK with operations spread throughout Europe in Spain, Romania, Russia, France and Germany,

CK’s UK manufacturing operation relies on a flexible workforce of up to 20% to work alongside their permanent employees.

In 2013, Calsonic Kansei appointed NRG as their recruitment partner to provide integrated resourcing solutions for temporary production, shop floor and warehouse / fork lift truck drivers to the three North East sites, situated in Washington, Sunderland and within the Nissan manufacturing plant.

CK wanted a partner who could conduct a full review of their recruitment process, tailor make a cost effective, compliant solution aligned to their permanent workforce and add value at every point of the process to support continuous improvement.

Following an in depth transition period which included a designated CIPD and REC qualified NRG Account Manager and flexible resourcing team spending time with CK HR and key stakeholders to fully understand the business and each site, 178 staff were transferred under TUPE principals over to NRG.

NRG’s on-site team works in partnership with Calsonic Kansei to ensure that operational business objectives and targets are achieved through delivery of required staffing skills and volumes.  In September 2013 increases in production demand saw the introduction of a 3rd shift onto line 2.

The next 3 months saw the temporary workforce requirement at Calsonic double to 410 at a time when all of the other Tier 1 suppliers were also ramping up.  NRG worked with CK around their attraction strategy which included radio campaign, press advertising and recruitment open days to successfully fulfil the headcount requirement.

March 2014 saw the removal of the 3rd shift and NRG managed a staggered headcount reduction of 90 temporary workers over a 3 month period, maintaining contact until there was an opportunity to return.

December 2014 saw the start of recruitment for the new Calsonic Kansei warehouse at Doxford International Park which officially opened in January 2015.    This project handled the TUPE of 15 staff from a previous logistics supplier as well recruitment of Reach Fork Lift Truck Drivers, a different requirement from the other CK sites who employ Counter Balance FLT Drivers.

NRG’s MI reporting includes Fulfilment, Managing Absence, Sickness & Time Keeping, Performance Management, Turnover and Payroll Processing.  The quality control processes and in-house payroll function have contributed to 100% adherence to the service level agreement.  Skill assessments are fully aligned to the required competencies of the role and the values of CK.

Calsonic Kansei have recently completed a comprehensive market value review and tender process and have renewed NRG’s contract  to supply their temporary workforce across all 4 North East sites for a further 3 years demonstrating their confidence in NRG’s ability.

Therese Liddle, CEO at NRG says ‘Calsonic Kansei are a valued client to NRG.  The success of this contract is the relationship between the two businesses build on transparency, trust and confidence.  We fully understand the complexity and challenges of CK’s operating model within the automotive sector and our recruitment expertise supports that need for excellence, flexibility, high quality and good value’

John Barnett, Operations Director at CK added ‘The agency temporary workforce is integral in the operational efficiency for Calsonic Kansei, and we consider them part of our Team.  We are delighted to work in partnership with NRG our chosen staffing partner.  They are integrated with CK teams and fully understand the operational best practice, efficiency and value we require to deliver total delivered cost savings to our customers’.
