Dr Julie Scanlon will take the spotlight at April’s virtual meet-up of ‘Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging in the North East’ to talk about the importance of International Lesbian Visibility Day on Monday 26th April, and how to be an ally to lesbians in the workplace.
In her own words, Julie is a ‘recovering’ academic. She provides consultancy, training and coaching to organisations across private, public and charity sectors. Her specialism is in diversity and inclusion and particularly the inclusion of women and of LGBT people.
Research shows that lesbians can often feel unwelcome in ‘LGBTQ’ celebrations such as Pride and are found to participate less in workplace LGBTQ networks than other groups. Lesbians are also obviously a minority in women’s networks and can feel unable to be themselves at work.
This session will give an insight into experiences of lesbians and how you might better support this underrepresented group in your work environment.

About Dr Julie Scanlon
Julie Scanlon started her business in coaching, training and facilitation in 2017 after a career of over fourteen years as an academic. She was keen to work more closely with her passion for social justice and to continue to help individuals, communities and organisations to be the best versions of themselves that they can be.
Julie brings her academic experience to her consultancy business. All of Julie’s work is values driven, examples include qualitative research for the Equality and Human Rights Commission and external evaluation work for the harm-reduction charity, Change, Grow, Live, for the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Northumbria and for Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums.
