Systems Accountant

Hays Travel is the UK's largest independent Travel Agent with headquarters based in Sunderland, Tyne & Wear. Having experienced a period of rapid growth and continued success through a combination of organic growth and via acquisitions, the expected Group Gross sales for 2018 is above £1,000m across the UK. They have recently been voted as one of The Sunday Times 100 best companies to work for in the UK for the third year running! I am currently working with them to recruit a Systems Accountant to join a finance team of c.90 people.

As Systems Accountant, you will be responsible for applying the concepts of information technology, accounting and financial management in the development, implementation and direct operation of financial systems. You should be fluent in all accounting basics, as well as advanced, detailed and specifically designed financial system structures.


Key Responsibilities will include:

  • Maintaining the accounting systems

  • Effectively monitoring and analysing system performance

  • Developing the organisations finance systems to support business initiatives

  • Acting as a key contact between Finance, IT and the business

  • Developing and improving the efficiency and capability of both the finance systems and the users including procedures, systems training and ad hoc support

  • Adding value by leveraging the potential of the finance systems in accordance with business needs

  • Evaluating aspects of the financial systems and producing long and short-term operational efficiencies

  • Lead the implementation of new financial systems

  • Develop bespoke reporting – to help Finance control key parameters of the business and anticipate change in trends



You must have excellent communication skills and strong attention to detail in addition to the following technical skills:


  • Experience with accounting packages (Navisions knowledge will be a plus), including the use of reporting tools to extract data

  • Proficiency in mathematics with distinctive and extensive analytical problem-solving skills

  • Detail orientation - the ability to handle large amounts of obscure data

  • Ability to adapt quickly to complex financial information and develop usable strategies from conceptual data

  • Computer literate to operate and handle advanced corporate and financial software

  • A creative and conceptually adept mind along with the ability to apply logical problem solving skills



Your CV must demonstrate a high degree of IT literacy within ERP systems, Excel, Word and Powerpoint.

You will ideally be a fully qualified accountant (ACA/ACCA/CIMA) however this is not essential, provided you have relevant experience within accounting. Demonstrable project management skills are also essential.
