Role Description:


The role holder will work as part of the Underwriting team and will be expected to support all forms of underwriting across personal and business banking, but with a focus on Business Banking underwriting covering all commercial products. The role holder will primarily be responsible for reviewing and underwriting Commercial and portfolio buy to let lending applications, submitted by introducers, in line with Atom lending criteria, procedures and controls. The role holder will also be expected to recommend improvements to underwriting policies and processes.


Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities:


  • Underwrite Business Banking and portfolio buy to let mortgage applications, further advances and annual reviews in line with lending policy, TCF and responsible lending principles whilst maintaining an acceptable risk position.

  • Review suitability of applicant businesses based upon detailed affordability assessment, using lending systems to record case details and underwriting rationale.

  • Ensure that all applications are complete, structured to manage the risk position, contain robust rationale and appropriate conditions to support the lending decision

  • Communicate with customers, intermediaries and related 3rd parties to gather information to make appropriate decisions and explain rationale behind lending decisions

  • Work effectively with colleagues from associated teams, referring cases outside of personal lending mandate to more senior Atom colleagues or appropriate mandate holder.

  • Review suitability of security and property valuations and liaise with Legal Panel and Valuation firms as appropriate.

  • Adhere fully to Atom policy and procedures and operate in line with Atom’s core behaviours and values.

  • Identify potential improvements to underwriting systems, policies, criteria and processes and perform credit assessment quality checks on colleague’s cases.

  • Undertake ad hoc work as directed by line manager from time to time

  • Act fairly, with integrity and reasonably in line with TCF and responsible lending principles in all dealings with customers, intermediaries, valuers and solicitors


Essential Capabilities/Experience:


  • Educated to at least GCSE level, including Maths and English

  • Substantial exposure to UK Corporate & Commercial banking sector

  • Experience in a commercial lending underwriting environment, covering a variety of sectors and lending types.

  • Substantial credit writing/assessment abilities covering customer, financial, serviceability & security assessments.

  • Full understanding of commercial legal, valuation processes along with wider commercial risk issues.

  • Demonstrate a full understanding of Responsible Lending, TCF and FCA thematic reviews

  • Familiarity with credit bureau data and its interpretation

  • Detailed knowledge of KYC, AML and Compliance related rules and regulations

  • Extensive customer service experience

  • Good verbal and written communication skills

  • Proactive, hardworking, flexible and able to work under own initiative

  • Team player with a strong service orientation

  • Confident, assertive and pragmatic approach with ability to exercise judgement and discretion where appropriate

  • Prior experience/knowledge of personal banking application u/w and/or transaction review

  • Experience with Commercial Risk modelling
